Clarendon Kids Wingback Divan Bed

A wingback headboard does something practical as well as decorative in a child's room: the forward-angled sides close off the corners of the bed, so a pillow stays where it was put and the wall behind takes fewer scuffs. On the Clarendon the centre is narrow vertical channels, with a tall smooth wing angling forward at each side.

The Clarendon kids wingback divan bed is made to order in four sizes and 26 colourways, with the headboard included rather than sold on separately.

Two storage choices

This is the Clarendon in the simplest form we offer it: you pick either no storage or two drawers at the foot end. The decision is less about how much you want to store and more about where your floor is free.

Drawers at the foot end pull out beyond the end of the bed, so they need clear floor there, not at the sides. In a box room where the bed runs into a corner with a wardrobe along one wall, that often turns out to be the one bit of floor you do have. If the bed's foot sits against another wall or a radiator, the drawers cannot open and the plain base is the sensible order. Where neither works, the lift-up version of the same bed opens from the side and uses the whole footprint instead.

Four sizes, including a genuine small single

Finished sizes, measured at the widest point:

  • Small Single 2FT6: 79 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
  • Single 3FT: 94 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
  • Small Double 4FT: 124 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
  • Double 4FT6: 139 cm wide by 196.5 cm long

The 2FT6 is the one worth knowing about. At 79 cm finished it fits rooms where a 3FT single leaves no walkway, and it is still a full-length bed at 196.5 cm, so a child does not outgrow the length of it in a year. All four sizes share that length, because the upholstered surround adds at the head and the foot. Measure the long wall before the width.

A size guide on the product page draws the bed from the side and from above with all four sizes at the same scale, which is easier to judge than a list of numbers.

Twenty-six colourways

The Clarendon is upholstered to order in 26 colourways, across Coniston, Naples, Chenille, Plush Velvet and Linoso. Every upholstered part of the bed is finished in the cloth you choose, so the wings, the channels and the base all match. Channelled upholstery catches light along each flute, which is worth bearing in mind: a Plush Velvet in Blue or Pink will show that detail far more than a flat Naples, where the shape reads quietly.

Where it sits in the range

Divan beds earn their place in children's rooms because the base is simple, the height suits making a bed quickly, and drawers can be added without a separate chest. If you want to see the alternatives, the kids divan beds are listed together, each with its own headboard and its own options.

We sell beds in Glasgow from our own store, and delivery is free within 50 miles of it and £50 beyond. Mattresses are sold separately, which matters for a child's bed: the tension should match the child, not the catalogue. Sizes, storage options and the full cloth list are on the Clarendon's page.
