Chelsea TV Stand: what a 140 x 40 x 42cm stand fits

Chelsea TV Stand: what a 140 x 40 x 42cm stand fits — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Chelsea TV Stand (1.4m)

View the product

The Chelsea TV Stand comes in one size, and that size is the whole decision: 140 x 40 x 42cm. It runs 1.4m along the wall, 0.4m front to back, and the top sits low. Work from those three figures before you look at anything else.

What the listing states, and what it does not

The description is specific about the frame and the top, and silent about the rest. What it gives you:

  • A chrome frame with circular legs at each end, joined by a supporting bar.
  • A marble top.
  • One size, 140 x 40 x 42cm, which reads as width, depth and height.

What it does not give you: any weight limit for the top, any finish or colour choice, any mention of shelves, drawers or cable openings, and no statement of whether the marble is solid stone or a marble-effect surface. Those last two decide a good deal, because one tells you whether a media box has anywhere to live and the other tells you how heavy the stand is to shift. Ask the shop before you order if either matters to you.

Is a 140cm top wide enough for your screen?

Screens are sold on the diagonal, which tells you almost nothing about the width you need. A 16:9 panel measures about 0.87 of its diagonal across, so:

Screen (diagonal)Approximate width
43inabout 95cm
50inabout 111cm
55inabout 122cm
65inabout 144cm

That is arithmetic rather than a spec sheet, so check your own model, because bezels differ. On a 140cm top a 55in screen leaves a hand's width at each end and a 65in is wider than the stand, which is fine above a wall bracket and a problem on feet. If your screen stands on feet, measure the spread between them rather than the screen width. Wide-set feet are the usual reason a stand that looked big enough is not.

A 42cm height and where the picture lands

42cm is a low top. Sit where you actually watch from, measure floor to eye, then compare that with 42cm plus half the height of your screen; the middle of the picture is most comfortable at or a little below eye level. A low stand suits a low sofa, and it suits a screen on the wall above it. If you watch from a dining chair or from bed, something taller such as the Torino Corner TV Unit, listed at 80 x 40 x 65cm, puts the picture higher.

Depth, walkways and the wall behind

0.4m of depth is modest, but it is the figure that decides whether the room still works. Measure from the face of the wall, not the skirting: skirting holds the stand forward, and so does a plug left in a socket behind it. Then look at what is left in front. Much under 60cm and people turn sideways to get past. In a narrow room the depth matters more than the width.

What it works with, and where to order

The Lewis TV Stand shares the same 40cm depth and 42cm height and is listed at 140cm or 160cm, so it is the one to compare if you want the option of a wider top. For a longer wall, the Torino X-Large TV Unit runs to 180cm. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.

Photographs and the one listed size are on the Chelsea TV Stand (1.4m) page, and the rest of the TV units sit beside it in the living room range.
