Chelsea Lamp Table: marble or ceramic top, and how to ask
This guide is about
Chelsea Lamp Table
The Chelsea Lamp Table is listed with a chrome frame, a circular pedestal top and one size, 50 x 50 x 55cm. The listing offers the top in two materials: marble, for the veining, or ceramic, for the finish. That choice is the decision this table asks you to make, and it is worth making it deliberately.
There is no top selector on the page
Worth knowing before you get there: the product page carries no drop-down for marble or ceramic. The two options are described in the listing but not set up as something you pick at the basket, so tell the shop which top you want when you order and have it confirmed back to you. If you order without saying, you are leaving it to be sorted out afterwards, and on a table bought for a particular room that is the one detail you do not want left loose.
Choosing between the two tops
What the listing actually commits to is short: marble gives veining, ceramic gives a plain refined surface, and both are described as suitable for a pedestal top at this size. It says nothing about how the marble is sealed, how either top should be cleaned, or what each one weighs. All three are fair questions, and the weight one matters most if the table has to go up a stair or be carried through a narrow door. Ask, rather than assuming the two options behave the same.
The visual difference is easier to settle yourself. Veined stone reads as a pattern, so it wants a quiet lamp base and a quiet rug near it. A plain ceramic top is the safer choice in a room that already has a figured rug, patterned curtains or a busy wall.
A round top inside square figures
The size is quoted as 50 x 50 x 55cm, but the listing calls the top circular, so read the first two numbers as the space the top needs rather than as a square panel: roughly a 50cm circle, with the 55cm figure being the standing height. Confirm which figure is which with the shop if your gap is tight.
A round top is the one to choose in a traffic route. There is no corner at shin height, nothing to catch a bag strap, and you can set it closer to the end of a sofa than a square table of the same width because the curve pulls away from the arm. Against that, you lose the corner-to-corner surface, so a laptop or a tray sits less happily on it than on a 50cm square.
What else to look at
If you want the same shape with a warmer metal, the SG-Chelsea Lamp Table is the gold-framed version. If you would rather have legs than a pedestal, the Lewis Lamp Table keeps the chrome frame and the marble-or-ceramic choice on four tapered legs at the same quoted height, and the GS-Lucy Lamp Table takes the cross-base route with a stone top. The whole shelf is in Side & Lamp Tables.
Ordering
This is a piece the shop supplies, so ask for current timings when you place the order, and state the top you want in writing. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. The photographs on the Chelsea Lamp Table page are the quickest way to judge the chrome frame, and the shop can tell you which top each one shows.
