The Chelsea range: a pedestal dining table and the chairs that suit it

The Chelsea range: a pedestal dining table and the chairs that suit it — Langham Furniture journal

Chelsea is built on a different idea from most dining ranges: instead of four legs at the corners, the tables stand on circular legs at either end, or on a round pedestal. That single decision is why the range is worth a look if you need to seat eight, or if you have ever had a guest sitting with a table leg between their knees. Here is what the range covers, how the pieces go together, and which table suits which room.

What Chelsea covers

The pieces named simply Chelsea are described with chrome frames and bases. The SG-Chelsea pieces are the gold-framed versions. The chrome side is the complete one — it is the half that runs across a dining table, a dining chair and a bar stool, so a kitchen island and a dining table can be put together in one finish.

Two gaps are worth knowing before you plan a scheme around gold: there is no gold Chelsea dining chair or bar stool, and no gold console. The gold side of Chelsea is tables only.

Why the base matters more than the top

The rectangular Chelsea tables, the coffee table, the TV stand and the bench share one arrangement: a circular leg at each end, joined by a supporting bar near the floor. The round table, console and lamp table instead stand on a circular pedestal.

Both do the same useful thing: they clear the corners, so chairs slide anywhere along the edge instead of being positioned by where a leg falls. That is what makes a crowded table workable, and it is the practical argument for Chelsea over a four-legged design.

The honest trade-off is the bar. On the rectangular pieces it runs between the two end legs at floor level, which means whoever sits at the middle of a long side will find it with their feet. Most people never notice; if you have someone in the house who sits sideways-on, the round table or the pedestal pieces avoid it altogether.

How many Chelsea chairs fit

A Chelsea dining chair is 62cm wide, so count 62cm of table edge per seat:

  • 1.5m x 90cm — two to a side uses 124cm of the 150, with one at each end if you need six.
  • 1.8m x 90cm — a comfortable six. Three a side would need 186cm and will not fit on 180cm.
  • 2m x 100cm — eight. Three a side comes to 186cm of the 200, and the 100cm ends take a chair each. This is where the end-leg base earns its keep.
  • 1.3m round — a little over four metres of edge once you go all the way round, so six with daylight between each chair and nobody on a corner.

One extra figure to allow for: the Chelsea chair is 60cm deep, which is a deeper seat than many dining chairs. Leave 90cm to 100cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or unit so it can be pulled out properly. The dining tables are 75cm high, so chair-to-table height is the standard arrangement.

Chairs and stools: match the knocker

Chelsea seating comes in two parallel versions, told apart by the metal detail at the top of the back. Match it across the room and the set reads as one; mix it and the difference shows at eye level.

Both chairs share the velvet back and chrome legs and both list Dark Grey and Black, so the colour decision only forces your hand at the edges: cream is on the ring-knocker chair, mink on the lion-knocker 01. Both stools are listed in dark grey, which makes dark grey the straightforward choice if you want the island and the table to match exactly.

Stools at a kitchen island

The Chelsea stools measure 54 x 48 x 102cm. That 102cm is the overall height including the back, not the seat height, so it is not the number to compare against your worktop. Send us your counter height and the depth of the overhang you need to tuck a seat under, and we will check the stool suits before you order three of them. At 54cm wide they are narrower than the dining chairs, which helps when you are fitting several along an island.

The bench, and the sizes that pair with it

The Chelsea Dark Grey Bench comes in 130cm and 180cm, 48cm deep and 50cm high — so 25cm between the bench and the 75cm tabletop. The lengths are not accidental: the 130cm sits neatly along the 1.5m table and the 180cm along the 1.8m or 2m.

A bench is the move for a narrow room, because it pushes right under the table and only needs walking space when somebody is actually sitting on it. It is also upholstered in the same soft grey velvet register as the chairs, so a bench on the wall side and chairs where guests sit is a sensible split — a backless bench is the less comfortable seat for a long evening, and there is no point pretending otherwise.

Beyond the dining room

The coffee table (120 x 60 x 45cm) and TV stand (140 x 40 x 42cm) carry the same end legs and supporting bar as the dining table, while the console (120 x 40 x 75cm) and lamp table (50 x 50 x 55cm) use the pedestal. In an open-plan room where the dining table is visible from the sofa, that shared language does more than any one piece. The console is also the obvious hallway piece if you want the look to begin at the front door, and there are gold equivalents in the SG-Chelsea coffee and lamp tables.

One thing to confirm, and getting it home

Several Chelsea listings describe both marble and ceramic surfaces, and the product page does not offer a choice between the two. If the surface matters to you — whether it is stone or a marble-effect finish, and how it will behave in a busy kitchen — ask us to confirm what a particular table is supplied with rather than assuming. Use the question link on any product page, or phone us.

Velvet and polished chrome are both difficult to judge on screen, so see them in daylight if you can. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond that. The full ranges are here: dining tables, dining chairs, bar stools and coffee tables.
