Chelsea Coffee Table: marble or ceramic, and how to choose

Chelsea Coffee Table: marble or ceramic, and how to choose — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Chelsea Coffee Table

View the product

The Chelsea Coffee Table is listed with a chrome frame, a circular leg at each end and a supporting bar running between them, under a top you choose in either marble or ceramic. The listed size is 120 x 60 x 45cm, which the description also writes as 1.2m x 0.6m. Two decisions follow from that: which surface, and whether the frame suits the way you use the room.

Marble or ceramic: what we can and cannot tell you

The listing names the two options and stops there. It does not say whether the marble is natural stone or a marble-effect surface, it gives no colour or veining, no thickness, and no care instructions for either. We are not going to guess at that in a blog post, because the answer decides how you treat the table for the rest of its life.

What is worth knowing before you ring us is which question to ask. For the marble, ask whether it is stone and what the supplier says about sealing and about standing a glass on it. For the ceramic, ask for the colour currently supplied. Note too that the product page has no surface selector, so the top is something to confirm with us when you order rather than something you pick in a dropdown.

The frame, and the bar between the legs

A circular leg at each end with a bar linking them is a different proposition from a leg in each corner. In its favour: nothing stands in the corners, and the table reads as lighter from across the room because there is less metal at eye level.

What to check: the bar crosses the space between the legs, and the listing does not say how high off the floor it sits or how far under the top it runs. So if you were planning to slide a footstool or a storage basket underneath, do not assume it will go. Measure the piece, look at the photographs and ask us for the height of the bar before you order.

Fitting 120 x 60cm into the room

MeasurementAs listedWhat to allow
Length120cmSuits a sofa of roughly 180-240cm
Depth60cmClears most internal doorways, but measure yours
Height45cmAbout level with a typical sofa cushion

Leave around 40cm between the sofa and the table edge for feet and for passing traffic, which makes the working footprint about 200cm along the length. The three figures are unlabelled in the listing, so if one direction in your room is tight, ask us to confirm which is which before ordering.

The same frame, a different metal

If you want this shape in gold rather than chrome, the SG-Chelsea Coffee Table is listed with the same two circular legs and supporting bar. For four slim chrome legs instead of two circular ones, compare the Lewis Coffee Table, and for a chrome pedestal rather than legs see the London Coffee Table. Everything we supply in this shape is in Coffee Tables.

No weight is given for any of them, and both marble and ceramic are heavy, so plan the route in and have somebody with you when it arrives. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.

When you have measured, the Chelsea Coffee Table page carries the photographs of both surfaces and the order form, and we will confirm the top before anything is dispatched.
