BK-Milan Dining Table: choosing between the 1.5m and the 1.8m

BK-Milan Dining Table: choosing between the 1.5m and the 1.8m — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

BK-Milan Dining Table (1.5/1.8m)

View the product

The BK-Milan Dining Table (1.5/1.8m) asks you one question on the product page, and the rest of this post is about answering it: 150cm or 180cm. Both sizes share the same 90cm depth, the same 75cm height, the same ceramic top and the same cross-shaped pedestal base standing on four black legs.

The two sizes as listed

OptionAs the listing gives itReads as
1.5m150 x 90 x 75cm150cm long, 90cm deep, 75cm high
1.8m180 x 90 x 75cm180cm long, 90cm deep, 75cm high

Only the length changes, which makes this an unusually clean decision. If your room is tight front to back rather than end to end, neither option helps and you should look at the round tables in the dining tables range instead.

What the extra 30cm actually buys

Reckon on about 60cm of table edge for a place setting. On a long side, 150cm gives you two generous places or three snug ones; 180cm gives three without argument. The 90cm depth is enough to seat someone at each end if you need to.

  • 150cm: four comfortably, six when both ends are used and nobody minds being close.
  • 180cm: six comfortably, eight using both ends.

If you regularly feed six, take the 180cm. If six happens twice a year and four is the normal week, the 150cm leaves you 30cm more floor, which is often the difference between walking round the table and squeezing past it.

The floor space each size needs

Allow about 75cm out from the table edge for a chair in use, and about 100cm where someone has to walk behind a seated guest.

SizeChairs on the long sidesChairs all round, with walkways
150cmabout 150 x 240cmabout 350 x 290cm
180cmabout 180 x 240cmabout 380 x 290cm

Mark the footprint out on the floor with tape before you order. It is the only test that never lies.

What the pedestal base changes

A cross pedestal puts the support in the middle rather than at the corners, so chairs are not fixed to four positions and can be shuffled along the edge. It also means the thing to check on delivery is the spread of the base feet, not the leg positions: a wide foot is what stops a chair tucking fully under. The listing does not give the span of the cross or the height of the foot, so ask if you are planning to use a bench or to tuck the table against a radiator.

The listing describes the ceramic surface as resisting stains and scratches. It does not state the top's thickness, its colour options, or the material under the black finish on the legs, so treat those as questions for the shop rather than assumptions.

If neither length is right

The same base appears under the BK-Milan Round Dining Table (1.1/1.3m), which is the better answer for a square room. At a fixed 180cm the BK-Jessica Dining Table (1.8m) swaps the pedestal for an angular black frame. And if you want the option of going past 180cm, the Chelsea Dining Table (1.5/1.8/2m) adds a 2m size.

Ordering

Pick the length against your floor rather than your table, and measure the route in while you are at it. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. Both sizes and all the photographs are on the BK-Milan Dining Table (1.5/1.8m) page.
