Beaumont Upholstered Ottoman Bed: sleigh lines over a lifting platform

Storage beds are usually plain, and traditional beds usually have nowhere to put anything. The Beaumont Upholstered Ottoman Bed is the awkward combination of both: a scrolled sleigh headboard, diamond tufted and set with crystal buttons, answered by a rolled foot end, with the entire area under the mattress given over to storage.

How it opens

The mattress platform lifts on gas struts and opens the full area beneath it as one lined compartment. Because this is an upholstered frame rather than a divan box, the sides stay shaped and covered, so the storage is hidden entirely when the bed is closed. Nothing about the outside of the bed suggests it opens, which is the point: the scrolled shape would be spoiled by a visible lid seam running along the side.

The listing does not state the opening height, so if a sloping ceiling, a shelf or a window above the bed is in play, ask us and we will check it for your size rather than let you find out on the day.

The sleigh curves at both ends push the length out: 231 cm on the three smaller sizes and 240 cm on the king and super king. The widths, by contrast, are modest for the presence the bed has. So the measurement that decides whether this bed works is the one taken straight out from the headboard wall, and the obstacles to watch for are an inward-opening door, the end of a wardrobe and a radiator under a window.

Storage that is worth the size you pick

Since the compartment is the bed's own footprint, choosing the king rather than the double buys sleeping space and storage at the same time. One undivided space takes what drawers cannot: a rolled rug, a suitcase, the winter duvet, a travel cot. And unlike a drawer base it does not care that the bed is in a corner, which is the usual reason ottoman beds end up in the rooms where floor space is already lost.

It is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, with the headboard, base and sides all finished in the cloth you choose. Diamond tufting on a scrolled board is made for a plush velvet, where each crystal button catches the light; the Coniston, Naples, Chenille and Linoso weaves read flatter and quieter. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond it. Mattresses are sold separately, and on a lifting platform that is genuinely useful: the mattress is what the struts raise, so its weight is part of how the bed feels to open day to day.
