Angel Wings LED wall light: sizes, LED options and wall fit

The Angel Wings (White/Colour LED) is a wall fixture: mirrored wings with crushed diamond centres, lit by LED. The listing gives two sizes and names white and colour LED. The size is the decision people get wrong, because a piece this shape is bought by eye on a screen and then hung above furniture it does not suit. So this is a tape-measure guide rather than a description.

The sizes and LED options, exactly as listed

The product page's own options read slightly differently: it offers colour LED at 60 x 80cm, colour LED at 90 x 120cm and white LED at 90 x 120cm. The written description names white LED for the smaller size. The two do not quite agree, so if you have your heart set on the small wings in a particular LED, ask us to confirm that combination before you order. The listing also does not label which figure is the width and which is the height, so confirm the orientation at the same time.

What 90 x 120cm does to a wall

Multiply it out and the larger size covers a little over a square metre of wall. That is a lot of wall, and it wants to be the only thing on it. A useful rule of thumb for anything hung above furniture is that it should span roughly two thirds of the width of the piece beneath it. Against a 135cm double headboard, two thirds is about 90cm, which is exactly the 90cm dimension here. A 150cm king or a 180cm super king carries it comfortably. Above a two-seat sofa of around 160cm it starts to look oversized.

The 60 x 80cm size is the one for a narrower run: a chimney breast, the wall at the end of a hallway, the space between a window and a corner, or above a single bed or a dressing table.

Height, sightlines and reflections

Centring the piece about 145cm to 150cm off the floor puts it at standing eye level, which is right for a hallway or a landing. Above a headboard or a sofa you want it lower than that, hung so there is a hand's width or two of clear wall between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the wings, not floating halfway up the room.

One thing worth planning for that no measurement will tell you: the wings are mirrored, so they will pick up whatever faces them. A window or a ceiling light opposite will show up in the surface. Stand in the doorway, look at the wall you have in mind, and think about what is behind you.

What the listing does not tell you

Being straight about the gaps is more useful than filling them in:

• how it fixes to the wall, and whether fixings are supplied
• whether it runs from a plug or needs wiring in, and where the cable leaves the piece
• how the colour LED is controlled, and whether anything is included to do it with
• what the mirrored wings and the crushed diamond centres are made of, and what the piece weighs
• whether it arrives as one piece or two, and how far apart two wings are meant to sit

What it sits with

The wall pieces in the lighting range share the same lit-sculpture idea in different outlines: PU655 LED Wings 01 is the wide one at 140 x 55cm, and PU657 LED Wings 03 is a square 83 x 83cm. Both of those are listed with a remote for switching between white and warm light; the Angel Wings listing does not mention one either way. For diamond detailing at table height, the MD41/42 Table Lamp carries diamond strips at 43cm tall, described differently from the crushed diamond centres here, so compare the photographs rather than expecting a match.
